I've got my new box setup, so I thought I'd see how the xorg transparency stuff was coming. All because I wanted to put a clock on my gnome desktop that would sit on top and be translucent.... And I found xgl.... read on for details
I run gentoo linux with gnome 2.12 on an amd64 dual core system (I really need to post my box info up.... and the case mod I'm in the process of doing....) Anyhoo, I was looking into transparency for xorg/gnome so I could get an analog clock that'd sit on my desktop and be translucent and on top. When I found this. Never one to turn down the bleeding edge (bruised... actually [knock wood] it was easier than that), I switched over to modular X using the Gentoo Wiki HOWTO Modular Xorg. Then I went back and followed the xgl instructions. I used coffee's version 59 overlay and didn't need to patch it at all. Next time I'd use the emxgl script in the svn get. Right now I'm using the startx (I added in the opacity plugin) script, but it doesn't shut down cleanly... I'll probably switch to gdm and gnome setting in the future. All I can say is... wow.... here's a screenshot: Check out this video |
